Deng Wen Ji 鄧文记 elevates traditional zi char dining at East Village with over two decades of culinary mastery from Chef Chong Hoi Ching, formerly of the renowned Geylang Claypot Rice. This authentic Chinese restaurant excels in three signature specialties: charcoal-fired claypot rice, robust Hokkien mee, and refined wanton mee that showcase the depth of Singaporean-Chinese cuisine.
The restaurant's crown jewel is their Charcoal Claypot Rice, cooked over open flames to achieve the perfect balance of smoky aroma, crispy rice crust, and tender toppings of chicken, Chinese sausages, and salted fish. Their Hokkien Mee delivers umami-rich broth with springy noodles and generous chunks of crispy lard, while the Dry Wantan Mee features honey-glazed char siew roasted over charcoal for unmistakable sweetness.
Operating Tuesday to Friday 10am-10pm and weekends 8am-10pm at #01-09 East Village, Deng Wen Ji offers both individual dishes and zi char selections in a laid-back setting that perfectly captures the essence of homestyle Korean cooking with efficient service ideal for family dinners.
We dined in during a non-peak period when the restaurant was empty, yet it still took 30 minutes for our Hokkien mee to be served. We later realized that a table that arrived 20minutes after us also received their hokkien mee.
I wouldn’t recommend the Hokkien mee—not just because of the long wait, but also because it lacked the signature wok hei flavor. Instead, it had a burnt taste, possibly due to the charred pork lard. The price of the hokkien mee is not worth the price ($13.90). The best part is that the Opeh leaves was not even serve with the hokkien mee.

Have visited this place many times, but today’s experience was very very disappointing. The claypot rice was extremely salty—not because of the salted fish, but the chicken itself. It was so overpowering that I couldn’t even taste the sweetness of the lup cheong at all.

I used to frequent this place when I was working nearby. Tried the Wanton Noodle and Hokkien Mee today and all was good for the Wanton Noodle except they excluded Opeh Leaf Wrapping for the $15 Hokkien Mee, a little disappointed.
*Update* I revisited the place one year later because I missed the chili and ordered the Wanton Noodle without Char Siew and I waited for 20 minutes because they forgot my order. When they check with the chef and cooked my wanton, there were only 5 wanton and 1 of them was just wanton skin, so literally if you compare picture 2 and picture 3, you can see I am literally ripped off; 1 Wanton for all the Char Siew. Wanton was also not cooked well as compared to before. Very disappointed. The food was trash, and the chili they serve was also very stingy. I will never come again.

The charcoal claypot rice here is really good. Before my colleagues and I went, we had to place our order by phone at least 30 minutes in advance. If you order on-site, you’ll need to wait around 30 minutes. No words can describe it, it’s just delicious.
The wanton noodles are also great, especially because of their unique char siew and homemade noodles. The tofu tastes amazing as well.
The place is always crowded, but the staff will arrange a table for you as soon as possible once you arrive.

The claypot rice is really very very good. The ingredients and salted fish is really a lot! It’s one of the best I had eaten!!! 😍 The wantons are big and savoury and flavourful. The char siu is with slight chao ta and is really tok gong! The Hokkien mee is a bit over powered by the over fried garlic. It is full of ingredients like the fatty pork and fresh prawns. I will come back for more! Satisfied 😊

Tried their wanton mee and claypot rice. The wanton mee had springy noodles, charred and slightly sweet char siew and plump wantons. Chilli quite spicy 🥵 Always feel wanton mee chilli should be on the mild side.
The claypot rice took a while, but worth the wait. The rice had that smoky, crispy bottom layer and the chicken was tender. Chinese sausage and salted fish gave it extra flavour. Will be back to try their Hokkien Mee.

We have been here years ago for the claypot rice & cooked dishes. So it looked very familiar. I just did not recall there was wanton mee back then.
Their chee yaw char is tops at 10/10.

The noodle & wanton are okay.
The fried hokkien mee is the wet variety with thicker white bee hoon noodle. It comes with 2 large prawns un-shelled with prawn head 😕 The fried pork lard is nice & crispy, same like the wanton mee. The chili paste is spicy hot.
The yellow lime from cordial syrup is pretty good ($2 in 450 ml plastic cup)
Might be back again for the claypot rice.

Food was good. Claypot rice was delicious, not too salty or sweet. Green dragon veggie was good. 南乳炸肉 was tasty, meat a tad fatty but that's OK.
Flies were persistent though, quite annoying. Space between tables very tight. Had to disrupt people eating when we wanted to leave our table.
Overall good experience nonetheless. Don't mind coming back again.

Very tasty Zi Cha, especially the sweet potato leafs fried with sandal chilies. Their clay pot rice is also very popular. You need to call to pre order on weekends. Wanton Mee is also their speciality.
